How to build your own entity
To build your own entity, first make one page on your site the authoritative source of facts (the entity home), add accurate Organization or Person structured data with a stable @id and sameAs links, create and align official profiles, keep name, address and phone details consistent, then earn independent coverage and, if you meet the notability rules, a Wikidata item. Recognition follows corroboration, not markup alone.
Step 1: define the entity
Decide the canonical name, type, one-sentence description and core facts. Record them in your entity map.
Step 2: create the entity home
Publish the facts on one indexable page (entity home) with visible profile links.
Step 3: add structured data
Add Organization, LocalBusiness or Person JSON-LD with a permanent @id and sameAs. Google says Organization markup can help it disambiguate your organization.[1] Officially documented Use the schema generator to draft it.
Step 4: align official profiles
Create or update profiles on the platforms relevant to you (LinkedIn, industry bodies, social networks). Use the same name, description and logo, and link each back to the entity home. Practitioner practice
Step 5: claim local and knowledge profiles
- Local businesses: add or claim and verify a Google Business Profile.[2][3]
- If a knowledge panel exists, claim it.[4]
Step 6: make facts consistent everywhere
Fix old addresses, phone numbers and names on directories and citations (NAP and citations). Practitioner practice
Step 7: earn independent coverage
Knowledge panels draw on sources across the web,[5] and Wikipedia requires significant coverage in independent reliable sources.[6] Officially documented Real press coverage, expert quotes, conference talks, awards and research are what move an entity from “self-described” to “corroborated”.
Step 8: add Wikidata if eligible
If the entity meets Wikidata’s notability policy, create an item with referenced statements.[7][8] See Wikidata. Do not create a Wikipedia article about yourself; see Wikipedia.
Step 9: monitor
Check the Knowledge Graph Search API, branded results and AI answers monthly (measuring entity SEO).
How long does it take?
There is no published timeline. Google generates panels automatically when it has enough information,[5] so the pace depends on how much independent coverage exists. Practitioner practice
Frequently asked questions
Can I build an entity without Wikipedia?
Yes. Most businesses have no Wikipedia article. A strong entity home, consistent profiles, a Business Profile and independent coverage are the foundation.
Will schema markup alone create a knowledge panel?
No. Google does not guarantee features from markup, and panels are generated from sources across the web.
Should a personal brand follow the same steps?
Yes, using Person markup, a profile page as the entity home, and profiles such as LinkedIn and ORCID where relevant.
