What is entity SEO?
Entity SEO is the practice of making the entities on your site (your organization, your people, your products, your locations and the topics you cover) unambiguous to search engines, so they can connect your pages to the right nodes in their knowledge graph. It combines clear writing, consistent facts, schema.org structured data and corroboration from trusted third-party sources.
What does entity SEO mean?
An entity is a single, distinguishable thing: a person, company, place, product, event or idea (see what is an entity). When Google introduced its Knowledge Graph in 2012 it described the goal as understanding “things, not strings”, so that a search for “Taj Mahal” could be matched to the monument or the musician rather than to the letters.[1] Officially documented
Entity SEO applies that idea to your own site. Instead of asking only “which keywords should this page rank for?”, you also ask “which things is this page about, and can a machine tell which ones I mean?”

Is entity SEO different from SEO?
It is a layer of SEO, not a replacement. Google’s structured data guidelines still require markup to describe visible content,[2] and a page must be crawled and indexed before any of its entity signals count.[3] Officially documented Start with SEO fundamentals, then add entity work. The comparison is covered in entity SEO vs keyword SEO.
Why does it matter for AI search?
Answer engines such as Google AI Overviews retrieve from search indexes and need to decide which business or person a question refers to. Google says normal SEO best practices apply to its AI features and no special markup is needed,[4] so clean entity data helps mainly by making your facts easy to find and verify. AEO.wiki covers the answer-engine side in how answer engines work and entities for AEO; this wiki explains the connection in entities in AI search.
What entity SEO is not
- Not a guarantee of a knowledge panel: panels are generated automatically.[5]
- Not a schema trick: Google does not guarantee any feature from structured data.[2]
- Not keyword stuffing with entity names: see entity SEO myths.
Frequently asked questions
What is entity SEO in one sentence?
Entity SEO is making the people, organizations, places and topics on your site unambiguous to search engines so they can connect your pages to their knowledge graph.
Do I need schema markup for entity SEO?
It helps, but it is not the whole job. Google uses structured data as an explicit clue, and it requires the markup to match visible content. Clear writing and consistent third-party facts matter too.
Is semantic SEO the same as entity SEO?
The terms overlap. Semantic SEO usually means covering a topic's meaning and related concepts; entity SEO focuses on the specific things and their identifiers.
