The schema.org sameAs property lists URLs of reference pages that unambiguously identify the same entity, such as its Wikipedia article, Wikidata item or official social profiles. It tells machines that these accounts and records all describe one entity. Include only profiles that are genuinely about that entity and, ideally, link back to your site.

What does sameAs mean?

Schema.org defines sameAs as the “URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item’s identity. E.g. the URL of the item’s Wikipedia page, Wikidata entry, or official website.”[1] Officially documented Google’s Organization example uses sameAs for the organization’s profiles on other sites.[2]

Why does sameAs help disambiguation?

Search engines reconcile records about the same entity. Wikidata items hold many external identifiers for exactly this reason.[5] When your site, your profiles and your Wikidata item all point to each other, it is easier to conclude they describe one entity.   1. List each official profile in sameAs on your entity home.
  2. Link from each profile’s website field back to the entity home.
  3. If you have a Wikidata item, add the official website (P856) and profile identifiers there, with references.[5]
  4. Show the same profile links visibly on the page, for users.

How many sameAs links should I add?

As many as there are genuine, official profiles for that entity. Quality and accuracy matter more than count.

Should I link to my Google Business Profile in sameAs?

Many practitioners add the Maps URL for a location. It is not documented by Google as required; make sure it is the correct listing.
