Entity SEO vs keyword SEO
Keyword SEO optimizes pages for the words people type; entity SEO optimizes for the things those words refer to. They are complementary: keyword research tells you how people phrase a need, and entity research tells you which things, attributes and relationships a complete answer must cover. Modern pages need both.
How do they compare?
| Keyword SEO | Entity SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Query strings | Things with identifiers |
| Research | Search volume, difficulty, intent | Knowledge Graph, Wikidata, related entities |
| On-page | Titles, headings, copy wording | Definitions, attributes, schema, internal links |
| Off-page | Backlinks | Consistent profiles, citations, mentions |
| Success signal | Rankings and clicks for queries | Correct panels, branded results, AI answers |
Why did search move toward entities?
Google’s own history shows the shift. It acquired Metaweb, the company behind the Freebase database, in 2010,[1] launched the Knowledge Graph in 2012,[2] and later added language systems such as BERT to interpret queries in context.[3] Officially documented Google’s ranking systems guide also lists neural matching, which it describes as an AI system that understands “representations of concepts in queries and pages” and matches them.[4]
Does keyword research still matter?
Yes. Google’s SEO Starter Guide still advises thinking about the words people would use to find your content and using them naturally in titles, headings and text.[5] Officially documented Entity work does not change the language on the page much; it makes the meaning precise.
How do you combine them on a page?
- Pick the primary query and the primary entity for the page.
- Write an answer-first introduction that names and defines the entity.
- Use question-style headings for the main sub-questions people ask.
- Cover the attributes and related entities a complete answer needs (see related entities).
- Add JSON-LD that matches the visible text, with
aboutormentionswhere helpful.[6][7] - Link to the pages that cover each related entity (see internal linking for entities).
The same structure helps answer engines extract passages; AEO.wiki explains it in content structure.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, entity SEO or keyword SEO?
Neither on its own. Keywords describe demand; entities describe meaning. Use keyword data to choose topics and wording, and entity research to make coverage complete and unambiguous.
Is entity SEO only for big brands?
No. Every business, author and product is an entity. Small sites benefit most from consistency because they have fewer third-party mentions.
